Verizon has announced earnings for the second quarter of 2012. Verizon Wireless announced that it sold 5.9 million smartphones in the second quarter of this year.
Of those smartphone sales, 2.7 million were Apple iPhones and 2.5 million were 4G LTE devices. iPhone sales were down 16 percent from Q1, when Verizon sold 3.2 million units. The carrier did note that 25 percent of its iPhone sales went to new customers, and that 73 percent of its post paid phone sales were smartphones. In its Q2 2012 earnings report, Verizon said that a full 50 percent of its post paid user base is now on smartphone devices.
Verizon says that it sold a total of 3.2 million 4G LTE devices in Q2, and it now has 12.2 percent of its post paid customers on 4G LTE devices.
Analysts had estimated earlier this year that the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX would overtake Apple’s iPhone as Verizon’s number one device this quarter, but according to the carrier’s own reports, the iPhone remains the top smartphone on its shelves.
